Party Guide For Lake Havasu

Party Guide For Lake Havasu

Tips and tricks to survive a spring break or a big weekend in Lake Havasu. employees have lived in Lake Havasu for 20 plus years… so it’s time we spilled the beans. Lake Havasu was started by Robert P. McCulloch in the late 1960’s and was originally started as a vacation resort for family’s. Little did McCulloch know that Lake Havasu would later turn into the party capitol of the world. Subsequently it has the nickname “Havasu, Home of Girls Gone Stupid” because this is where all the notorious mayhem started.

Here is a list of all the “DO’s” because there isn’t any “DONT’S” in Lake Havasu on Spring Break and big weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

(Warning if you are not into beer guzzling and scantily clad women stay away from Lake Havasu on the big weekends!!!)

1. The Channel: The number one thing everyone must do in Lake Havasu is visit the Bridgewater Channel. You will find 500,000 dollar boats, beer bongs, hot women with nothing but pasties on, hot boys for the girls and tons of party action for a half mile stretch from the London Bridge to Rotary Park. The water is warm and the people are looking for a good time. Be sure to get some pics and video to take back home to taunt your friends.

kokomo Lake Havasu

There are also some great restaurants and bars on the channel. If your into dancing and hardcore parties, check out the world famous Kokomo. Kokomo has an awesome pool, bar and multi-level dance floor that looks out over all the action on the channel. Another cool bar is the Heat Bar. Lot’s of hard bodies hang here.  If you want a bite to eat there are quite a few places to get your grub on. Shugrue’s is upscale. Barley Brother is a great micro brewery that is not as fancy as Shugrue’s but still requires shoes and shirts. Javelina Cantina is great for mexican food and margaritas. If your looking for something quick and affordable check out Papa Leone’s pizza (928) 854-5566 . Another great choice is Mudshark Pizza. (928) 680-4555 They will deliver pizza down to the channel, or their “Boater Boxes” which includes: 3 sub sandwiches, salad and a 2 liter of soda. Be careful, there are a ton of cops and they are on the look out and itching to take someone down.  MAP

2. Rent a boat or jet ski: If you don’t have a boat or jet ski already you will want to rent one. We recommend Whett Rods right on the channel. What good is it coming to Lake Havasu if you don’t see the Lake?

Cliff Jump At Copper Canyon
Cliff Jump At Copper Canyon

A. Copper CanyonOnce your vessel is rented you will want to head south on the lake to Copper Canyon. Not nearly what it use to be in it’s hay day in the late eighties and early nineties but still a great time. Lot’s of eye candy, people doing crazy stuff like cliff jumping, and the good ole’ beer bong. Head to the very back of the canyon and you will be able to see petroglyphs from the ancient Chemehuevi Indians. If you’re feeling adventurous, and have time to kill, you can keep heading south on the lake to Havasu Landing and have a good lunch for a cheap price and get a look at Parker Dam, and The Bill Williams River. For people that like to fish, Parker Dam and Bill Williams River are excellent places for fishing.

Sandbar HavasuB. Once you have got your jolly’s at Copper Canyon head back up north towards the sandbar. We recommend driving through the channel on your way up for some visual pleasure and a chance to buy some water, ice and get a bite to eat.

The sandbar is where the party moved to after Copper Canyon was heavily patrolled by police in the mid nineties. Ironically the police drove people away from Copper Canyon only to form an even bigger party at the sandbar. If you get there early be careful because you may become trapped as you can see in the photo to the left. If you get caught in the center of the sandbar you are NOT getting out until the party is over! Also be warned this is not a place for children, there ARE naked men, women and rather intoxicated path-goers at the sandbar.

Side note: drive another mile up the river and you will see some of the most beautiful parts of the Colorado River. Brilliant red rock and crystal blue waters!

Sandbar HavasuSandbar Havasu

If you decide to venture out onto the lake make sure you bring tons of water and/ or Gatorade and DRINK IT! A bunch of people each year that come to Lake Havasu end up dehydrating, thinking by just being in the water that they will be ok. A few even end up going to the hospital.  And if your going to drink beer and liquor, pound a 16 ounce water every 3 or 4 beers to avoid what you may regret later. Too many people get hurt out here and we don’t want it to be one of you! Leave Havasu on a good note.

3. Uptown Havasu: The heart of Lake Havasu is “Uptown”. This is the biggest cluster of bars, clubs and restaurants in Lake Havasu.

Starting from the bottom on up McCulloch is

The Red Onion and the R.O. Bar. The Red Onion has some of the best food in town with a patio that is shared with the R.O. Bar.

Next up is J’s smoke shop and Wine Bar. Great cigar, wine and beer selection. Featuring open mic and live music almost every night of the week.

Next door to J’s is Mad Dog’s Bar and Grill. A locals favorite with good food, affordable drinks, patio with misters and tons of TV’s playing your favorite sports.

Up the street a little ways is McKee’s bar and Grill which IS the local bar of Lake Havasu. McKee’s has excellent drink specials and probably most underrated food menu in town. With darts, pool tables, ping pong, pinball, karaoke and a huge outdoor smoking patio they have it all.

Next up is the famous Desert Martini. In business over 30 years with their signature 16 ounce schooners of beer with an olive, a.k.a the

Desert Martini Havasu
Desert Martini

“Desert Martini” for only $2.50 and the only public place in town with shuffle board. This place is the ultimate dive bar… and we mean that in a good way.

Just next door to Desert Martini is Bj’s Karaoke and Cabana Bar. Bj’s has a huge outdoor patio with tons of dancing room, mechanical bull, fire pits, misters for hot days and karaoke inside. Bj’s also features extremely reasonable drink prices.

Last but not least is Lotz On The Rocks. Featuring cryogenically frozen drinks and only top shelf liquor it the newest and trendiest place to be on a weekend.

Jet Skiing on Lake Havasu: From Topock Gorge To Pirate’s Cove

Jet Skiing on Lake Havasu: From Topock Gorge To Pirate’s Cove

Topock Gorge Narrows 3A few weeks ago Havasu City Guide was lucky enough to score some sweet jet ski’s from Whett Rods Jet Ski and Boat Rentals. We took the whole family from Lake Havasu’s Thompson Bay up through the world famous Bridge Water Chanel under the London Bridge to Lake Havasu’s National Wildlife Refuge past Crystal Cliffs then up into the beautiful red rock Topock Gorge and finally had lunch at the new Pirate Cove.

The trip took a total of about 7 hours round trip just taking our time and making many stops on the beautiful shores of Lake Havasu and the Colorado River. Once you get to the Wildlife Refuge you are are now what is considered the Colorado River and have left Lake Havasu. The Wildlife Refuge is absolutely beautiful with reeds, tons of incredible birds and other animals such as beavers. This is definitely a bird watchers paradise!

After the refuge you begin your trip into the southern part of the Topock Gorge. At the very south end of the gorge is the infamous “Sandbar” which is famous for wild parties and hundred of boats linked together. Thankfully we were there on a Wednesday so it was very peaceful and only a few boats and jet skiers in site. We stopped to take some picture, panorama and video that turned out great!

Spending about 30 minutes swimming and digging in the sand we moved north to get into the core of the gorge and the aw inspiring red rocks Topock Gorge Lake Havasu Colorado Riverof the Topock Gorge. The Topock Gorge is often over looked or not even noticed by visitors to Lake Havasu. Granted with out a jet ski or boat it is impossible to get to. So that being said, rent a boat or jet ski by all means! The gorge is extremely slow moving water with some of the coolest and most beautiful beaches you will ever see. Between the red rocks the clean and pristine water it is ours (as locals) by far the best part of Lake Havasu. Also if you are an angler there is some great fishing holes for plenty of fishing action! Oh yeah and don’t for get the ancient pictographs.

We were getting hungry so we decided to head north to grab a bite to eat at the new Pirates Cove about 10 miles north of the gorge. The Pirate Cove is one cool spot. It features a beautiful restaurant with a patio and bar, plenty of boat parking, cabins for rent, great beaches and 3 huge zip lines! This is a great place for the entire family. The parents love it and the kids love it even more because of the pirate decor that makes you feel like captain hook is lurking around the corner. Food was great and reasonably priced and the servers were also very friendly!

Pirates Cove Zip LineThe day was getting late so we decided to turn back and head towards Lake Havasu. On the way back we got some more killer pictures and stopped one last time in the narrows of the gorge and jumped in for a swim. At the point the kids were tired and actually fell asleep on the jet ski’s going about 40 miles per hour!

All in all it was an absolutely fantastic day. The jet ski’s were fun and ran excellent. The kids loved every minute and the parents had a great memory that we will keep forever.

Make sure to check out the pictures, panoramas and video below of the Topock Gorge.
